A look at the Vötter’s Oldtimer Museum in Salzburg
Where past automotive dreams come alive again
How did the much-cited “little man” actually move on the streets of the world? The Vötter’s Oldtimer Museum in Salzburg is dedicated to the typical vehicles of the 1950s to 1970s with an extensive collection. Among them are such impressive highlights as a Messerschmitt cabin scooter and a BMW Isetta. Maybe you know one or the other vehicle from your own youth, from parents, grandparents and acquaintances – perfect to reminisce and fill in history gaps!
What to see and marvel at
Let yourself be transported into a motorized world full of classics and rarities with a wide variety of cars, motorcycles and tractors, including the Steyr-Zeiserl with 23 seats (the largest convertible in the world) or the steam locomotive BJ 1893 with the salon car from 1915. Here you will see non-stop interesting videos. This includes a trip to a 1960s apartment with our grandma’s original furnishings.
In another area, you’ll dive deep into the history of Volkswagen, dedicated to the genius and car pioneer Ferdinand Porsche. This is no coincidence, as the Porsche family’s residence is in Schüttdorf / Zell am See, about five kilometers away.
Messerschmitt expert Fritz Fend
For classic car enthusiasts, the Messerschmitt cab scooter is almost like the holy grail. This special, extremely high-priced rarity was donated by family friend Fritz Fend, designer of the Messerschmitt cabin scooter and co-designer of the Messerschmidt jet fighter.
Fend visited us in 1998 during the European cabin scooter meeting, where the Großglockner High Alpine Road was conquered. The final evening took place at the castle Kaprun in the immediate vicinity – filmed, by the way, like the entire meeting and the Hochalpenstraße-Bezwingen, by the former sports channel DSF. A separate exhibition area with a commemorative plaque under the motto “Fritz Fend and his vehicles” in the museum is dedicated to Fritz Fend. A documentary about the tilting train also awaits you in our Oldtimer Museum in Salzburg.
